There has been an unprecedented level of interest and investment in indoor air cleaning technologies. Many manufacturers claims are just a prevarication of the science of Ionization. Also referred to as Cold Plasma, Non-Thermal Plasma, Bi-Polar Ionization and Photohydroionization. Many of the manufacturers blatantly hide the science or inflate the truths for an intended outcome. Very few are forthcoming, aggressive marketing practices often alters the science."Mechanisms for the removal of air pollutants or bacteria are still not proven, especially for reactions with coagulated aerosols in the air in so called “clustered ions” emitted by indoor air control devices" T. Yamauchi et al., 2007.
This site was set up to present scientific reviewed information apart from industries claims for the Indoor Air Quality Purification Market.
"The "consensus vacuum" regarding air ions has allowed commercial exploitation of this area as concern over health and air quality grows. The presence of conflicting data and the absence of definitive proof and consensus allows negative ion promoters a choice of which data are to be presented as fact. This has created confusion, polarization of opinion,
and occasionally outright deceptive practices, and it serves to degrade the credibility of the entire field of study."

"After evaluation of all the available facts, it can be concluded that it is not possible to adapt Non-Thermal Plasma reactors to the cleaning of weakly contaminated indoor air without further ado. A high input of energy into the system yields unacceptable ROS concentrations, while a low input yields partially oxidized products whose irritant effect is in some cases stronger than that of their precursors. At the same time, the release of ROS, and particularly ozone, can also be expected in the latter case."
H. Heberer, Reflection on the Efficiency and Toxicological Implications of Non-Thermal Plasma Air Cleaning Devices, BGIA, Germany
"The inefficacy of NPBI (Needle Point Bi-Polar Ionization) for MS2 on surface and for formaldehyde in air gives rise to the hypothesis that the ions produced by this device may not have the strength to extract hydrogen atoms from carbon chains. If the ions were able to inactivate MS2 in the air by breaking the carbon chains, why wouldn’t they be able to do the same on surface, even if at a slower pace? Is it possible that the reduction of MS2 in the air happened through agglomeration of the aerosolized particles (which would be consistent with the observed reduction of ions in the chamber upon injection) rather than through a chemical reaction? It should be noted that a well-known BPI manufacturer has stated, “So we never ionize oxygen and, therefore, we don’t generate ozone as a byproduct.” Was the manufacturer referring to any kind of oxygen (including dioxygen) or possibly only to atomic oxygen? If there is no form of reactive oxygen, how will formaldehyde break down? Is it possible that, in an effort to reduce ozone and meet UL 2998, BPI manufacturers reduced the production of reactive oxygen species to the point where the effectiveness of the technology was reduced? Validation of these hypotheses will require further investigation."

The present results revealed that some models of air purifiers that diffuse ROS potentially cause DNA damage in the lung although the mechanism was left unsolved.
